I've Got Decorating on the Brain

Creativity usually strikes me in spurts, and lately I feel like a lot of my creative energy has just been tapped out.  Even getting dressed in the morning has felt like a chore.  But, fortunately, I'm on the up and I've got colors and patterns swirling around in my head.

Because I have the attention span of a squirrel, I can usually only focus on zhushing up one area of my life at a time.  I've been focusing a lot on remixing my wardrobe, but inevitably my attention has been pulled back to my creative arch nemesis: the living room.

I don't know what it is, but I just can't get this room to a point where I like it.  I think it has a lot to do with the fact that Ryan and I purchased a bunch of pieces off of Craigslist when we first moved in because we literally had zero furniture.  The upside to that is we're not sitting on boxes, but the downside is that we've got a room full of pieces that we don't love, but instead just "work."  Also difficult is the fact that Ryan and I have COMPLETELY different styles.  He's probably the most matchy-matchy person I've ever met.  As in, the room isn't right unless you go to the furniture store and buy the whole damn matching set.

Ugh.

He also is a big fan of the color black.  Now, I love me a black and white room, but when your room is full up on clunky black furniture from Target, it feels a little oppressive.  Not to mention the fact that Ryan is totally okay with a room that is full of pieces from Target/Kohl's.  Sure, the room looks put together and done, but how boring is that!?  I don't want something to be done for the sake of being done.  I don't want something hung on the wall just to take up space.  I want a room to be full of items that we've curated and have meaning and appeal to us.  I don't really think Ryan gets that.

End rant.

So, back to my original intent, I've got decorating on the brain.  It's no secret that I absolutely hate my couch and loveseat set, and I'm pinching away pennies to get a new one.  In this post, I couldn't quite decide what kind of room I wanted, and it's amazing to see that I don't even LIKE some of those rooms anymore.  My aesthetic is definitely evolving.  But that first room, by Jessica Helgersen?  Still totally head-over-heels in love with it.  I think black and white might be my thing.  Which is good, because, as I mentioned, Ryan is a fan of black.

So here's what I've got stewing in my little noggin as of late:

and, just to keep it from getting bland, we could put it all on top of this rug?

I'm wondering if I can sell Ryan on it?  He tends to gripe when I redecorate without consulting him first.

    1. I found that rug and fell in love instantly. I've wanted a cool kilim rug for a while but they're really expensive! Because this one is a flat woven cotton rug, it's only $70 for a 4x6! We need a rug that's at least 8' long for our living room, so I'm thinking of buying two and binding them together.

I feel like my aesthetic has been changing a lot lately, I think due to blog/pinterest influence. But I've always liked Scandinavian and mid-century modern, and I love anything old and crusty, so I think I'm just gonna start collecting what I like and see how it goes from there. :)
